Immunisation for the low birth weight and/or preterm infant
This factsheet provides guidance on the immunisation for those infants born pre-term and/or with a low birth weight.
Overview
Young infants are especially vulnerable to a number of vaccine preventable diseases, particularly pertussis (whooping cough), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease, pneumococcal disease and influenza. Preterm and low birth weight infants have an even higher risk than full term infants of developing serious complications from vaccine preventable diseases.
