Overview

Note: From 1 July 2026, fees will apply to some vaccinator training courses, as temporary funding that enabled full fee subsidies from Health New Zealand has ended. Course fees are shown when the course is selected, or you can click here for a table of new course fees, effective from 1 July, and more information. Please note that foundation‑level courses will remain free to support employers and new vaccinators entering the workforce.

Vaccinating Health Worker Stage 1 course

When registering, please choose carefully to ensure you can attend the practical workshop. Each course has a specific date and venue for this workshop.

The online course takes around six hours to complete. You should complete and pass the online assessment BEFORE attending the three hour face-to-face practical workshop.

Please ensure you and your employer have read the Vaccinating Health Worker workforce page.

Registration requirements:  

You must be:

  • A non-regulated healthcare worker (e.g., kaiāwhina, healthcare assistant, pharmacy technician) currently employed in a healthcare setting.
  • Employed by an organisation that understands the role of the VHW and the support and supervision required.
  • Able to complete the theory component and online assessment before attending the practical workshop.
  • Committed to attending the practical workshop at the venue and on the date booked on registration.‍

  • Cultural engagement
  • Communication
  • Practical aspects of giving a vaccine
  • Post vaccination observation
  • Cold chain
  • COVID-19
  • Influenza
  • Tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough
  • Human papillomavirus
  • School-based vaccinations‍

Assessment

At the end of the online course, complete the multiple-choice assessment. There are 30 questions, and you must get 24 correct to pass. You have 60 minutes to complete.
