This e-learning course equips health professionals who provide clinical assessments for children and young people involved with the Youth Justice System (YJS) in Aotearoa New Zealand, with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes and tools. Participants will learn to conduct health assessments for young offenders or those at high risk of offending, focusing on identifying risks and resiliencies to develop effective intervention plans.

The course embraces Positive Youth Development (PYD) principles, emphasising a strengths-based approach. It highlights the importance of family involvement, cultural responsiveness, community engagement, and youth participation in assessments and interventions. Participants will explore how to support holistic youth development, encouraging growth and positive change while addressing both immediate and long-term health concerns within the YJS context.

Intended audience

  • New Youth Justice Health Assessors.
  • A refresher training for existing Youth Justice Health Assessors.

Prerequisites

  • Hold a current annual practising certificate (APC).  
  • Have a minimum of two years of practical experience in nursing.  
  • Be currently employed in the youth health sector for a minimum of one year.

Course content

This e-learning course comprises 10 modules covering:

  1. Introduction to the Youth Justice System: Overview of the principles, processes, and objectives of the Youth Justice system in New Zealand.
  1. Youth Justice trends in Aotearoa New Zealand: Analysis of current trends and statistics related to youth offending.
  1. Government strategies for youth in Aotearoa: Examination of national policies and strategies to support young offenders.
  1. Child and adolescent development: Explore developmental stages, psychological needs, and factors influencing lifelong well-being.
  1. Engaging with young people: Learn strategies for building trust and engaging with young offenders, emphasising cultural competency and the importance of whakawhanaungatanga (building relationships).
  1. Communication difficulties: Identifying and addressing common communication barriers in youth justice settings.
  1. Core Health and wellbeing needs: Assessing young offenders' physical, mental, and emotional health needs.
  1. Working with others: Collaborating with families, whānau, and other multi-disciplinary teams to support young offenders.
  1. Understanding the Youth Justice System: Explore the processes and underpinning legislation that underpins the Youth Justice system.
  1. Reports for Oranga Tamariki: Guidelines for writing clear, concise, and impactful reports for Oranga Tamariki, ensuring consent completion, confidentiality and appropriate information sharing.  

Other course details

Approximately 16 hours to complete, with the flexibility to save progress and return anytime.  

There is also an Assessment quiz and a Next steps module.  

Upon completion, participants can print a certificate for their professional portfolio.

After completing this course, participants will have access to an online feedback survey to help improve the course.
